    Whistleblowing: Why employers must create a ‘speak-up’ culture
    At a time where public trust in our sector is in question, it is essential that staff feel that it is safe and acceptable to raise concerns about wrongdoing, risk or malpractice. Good whistleblowing arrangements can help prevent damage to lives and livelihoods, save huge costs and avoid legal claims. In this session Cathy James will advise on the practical implementation of effective whistleblowing policies and processes, as well as the cultural change necessary to create a positive environment where people feel confident to speak up.

    Case study: Defining and living our core values
    In this session Nicki Shaw will explain the ongoing process of defining and implementing a set of values and behaviours at Princess Alice Hospice, and their influence on the organisation and its people. She will discuss the practical steps being taken to bring these values to life across the charity, including their role in recruitment, providing a tool for dealing with difficult people and as an opportunity to strengthen staff and supporter relationships.

    A lack of gender, age and ethnic diversity is a pressing issue for the UK charity sector, particularly in senior positions and on trustee boards. Our panel will consider why this is, the potential drawbacks and benefits of different recruitment approaches and why a diverse workplace matters. How can charity leaders develop a strategic and operational approach to cultural diversity and equality while also avoiding unconscious bias?

    At independent media agency the7Stars, the employees don’t have job titles, and are able to determine their own holiday entitlement and working hours. Founder Jenny Biggam explains how banishing hierarchy and developing a trusting and transparent culture has resulted in high retention rates and rapid growth. She will explain how breaking the rules has been good for business, and why she believes success is directly linked to developing a motivated and engaged team.
