As I write, it still isn’t clear whether we will in fact leave the European Union on 29 March – or if you are reading this on publication date – last Friday. It at least looks less likely that we will have a no-deal Brexit, meaning I don’t feel that I now have to write something about stockpiling columns just in case of a short-term shortage.

Stockpile has become another in a growing list of words that have increased in usage during the Brexit shenanigans, which in themselves are two more. We have also seen impressive stats for backstop, intransigence and sovereignty, which are bandied around despite the context often betraying a limited understanding by the user of what they actually mean. And definitions of democracy have taken on a life of their own depending on the users’ agenda. Perhaps we should have a meaningful vote on what the correct one is.
