“Most finance people I have spoken to have fallen into accountancy, rather than having a long-standing desire to do so,” laughs Jenny Howard, who is almost a year into her role as director of finance and digital at the Marine Society and Sea Cadets.

Howard’s own enjoyment of numbers started with a talent for maths and solving puzzles when she was growing up – “two things which make for good accountants”, as she puts it – then a stint in the civil service after she left school.
