What attracted you to your current role?

Sported UK is a small charity headquartered in London helping young people develop through sport. It created my role specifically to grasp the opportunities it saw in Welsh communities and funders.

There were two main things that attracted me to the role. Firstly, the job is to develop the charity’s fundraising in Wales. I am based in Cardiff and I am passionate about being Welsh. I am very proud of the prosperity and the skillsets of my country. Too often, large charities have their fundraising functions in England, which then have difficulty engaging with the communities and funders in the devolved nations. This was made worse by the pandemic, when we saw a lot of charities shutting down their services in Wales, making their regional head of fundraising redundant or amalgamating the role in England. I felt Wales was in danger of losing its identity in terms of having a skillset and knowledge base, either in fundraising or in charitable service delivery.
