A few days after the Oxfam story broke, feminist Julie Bindel wrote an excellent column in The Independent succinctly dismantling suggestions from pro-prostitution lobbyists that Oxfam staff who paid for sex in Haiti in 2010 were in fact doing vulnerable women a favour. However, you could only wince at the headline: ‘The whole charitable sector uses prostitutes, not just Oxfam’. Ouch.

The paper may have had complaints, because the headline has since been changed online. It now reads: ‘The prostitution claims surrounding Oxfam don’t surprise me. I’ve seen it all before with charities across the world – and the UN’. This better represents Bindel’s point; her article is concerned with international aid and the power imbalance that exists between poor, desperate women with families to feed and the rich, usually white, men sent to help them. But the truth is that sexual abuse and exploitation is not confined only to overseas settings – it’s a problem that affects domestic charities too; witness recent revelations about the Presidents Club dinner, the Kevin Spacey Foundation UK, and the culture of sexism and harassment forged at the top of Save the Children UK’s head office a few years back.
