Coming back from maternity leave can be hard. Coming back and being told that “digital” has been added to your media portfolio, in the heady days of 2011, was a knockout blow. I hated Facebook, couldn’t see why anyone was posting pictures of their breakfast and at the time half the office was addicted to online Scrabble.

The one thing I did think was fairly useful back then, was the power of social media for organising. I’d seen the use of mobiles to organise striking workers, protesters and campaigners, and that was the ray of light I desperately needed to motivate me to fully embrace the role.
