Recently, a large children’s charity found itself in a situation where it was struggling to survive. It had expanded rapidly and now had an income of almost £30m, but it faced an environment where it wasn’t going to get the government funding it needed to continue. Large numbers of young people depended on it, but it looked like it was not going to be able to keep going. In the end, it folded.

Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? But we’re not talking about Kids Company here. The charity under discussion is 4Children, which ran more than 100 children’s centres, youth centres and nurseries up and down the UK. In September 2016 the charity went into liquidation, but it did so quietly and without fuss, and almost every service was saved, as well as almost every job. The majority of the services were taken on by Action for Children.
