Last month, rights charity the Advocacy Project voted to allow its chief executive to join its board, subject to certain tests being met on cost and timescale.

It was the culmination of a process which began last autumn, driven by one of the charity’s trustees who is a medical director at an NHS foundation trust and its chair who is a finance director at a private company – both sectors where unitary boards are commonplace.
