Charities supported by the Queen raise a combined £1.427bn a year, research from the Charities Aid Foundation has found.
The 510 British charities supported by the monarch raised the princely sum in the last financial year, according to CAF.
Among those 510 charities are some fundraising giants; Cancer Research UK, which raised £351m in the last year on record; British Red Cross, which raised £119.9m; and Barnardo’s which raised £43.5m.
The Royal Family as a whole support more than 2,400 charities in Britain, and are eagerly sought-after patrons. In a YouGov poll, released last February, Prince William was found to be the most influential charity patron in the UK, while the public and charity sector waited with bated breath to discover which charities his new wife, the Duchess of Cambridge, would choose to support in her public life.
CAF chief executive John Low praised the Queen for setting an example in supporting so many charities.
“The Diamond Jubilee is all about celebrating the benefit the Queen has brought to this country during her reign, and these figures certainly prove that her support is invaluable to the charity sector,” said Low.
“We want to promote a culture where supporting charities by giving time or money is the norm. The Queen’s work for charities of all types is an example to all of us.”
