BBC One has commissioned a documentary with the working title The rise and fall of the ‘Angel of Peckham’ which will show what went on at the charity during its final days.
The hour-long documentary will air early next year and follows Camila Batmanghelidjh, founder and chief executive, as the charity faced a funding crisis and criticism in the media which led to its collapse.
Filmmaker Lynn Alleway was working with the charity on a follow-up to a documentary she had made about the charity ten years ago when the charity announced its closure.
She said: “I was filming with Camila Batmanghelidjh when the Kids Company story first broke and I continued to film from inside of the organisation whilst a media storm erupted around us - it's a story that no-one has yet seen.”
Patrick Holland, head of commissioning, documentaries at the BBC, said: “Lynn’s film will offer a unique perspective on the collapse of Kids Company. Being on the inside, the film will tell the story of the charity’s last weeks, with exceptional access to the founder Camilla Batmanghelidjh, and explore the wider questions of just what happened to this high profile charity.”
Batmanghelidjh and Alan Yentob, chair of Kids Company, are set to appear before the Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee next Thursday. Civil Society News will livestream the evidence session on our website.
