Virgin London Marathon's first-ever joint official charity partner, the Prostate Cancer Charity and Breast Cancer Care working as TeamPB, has surpassed its £1m fundraising target for this year's race.
TeamPB was the first joint official charity of the April race and the 830 runners running for the new, dual-charity brand have now raised £1,046,776 (including gift aid), with more funds still coming in. The money will be divided equally between the two charities and will be used to fund a range of services and projects to support people living with and affected by either prostate or breast cancer in the UK.
Following this year's success with collaborating charities, the Virgin London Marathon has selected two charities again as its official partners for 2013: Age UK and YouthNet.
Breast Cancer Care’s chief executive, Samia al Qadhi, said: “It is no mean feat completing a marathon, but speaking to some of our TeamPB runners in the post-event reception, and hearing how cancer has touched their lives, I was touched by their commitment to support what The Prostate Cancer Charity and Breast Cancer Care is trying to achieve.”
Owen Sharp, chief executive of The Prostate Cancer Charity, added: “These vitals funds will be ploughed back into the work of both charities to ensure we can support people who are and will be affected by the most common cancers in men and women in the UK.”
The TeamPB partnership was backed by celebrities including actors Amanda Mealing and Damian Lewis.
