Captain Tom’s name removed from charity due to ‘family’s demand’

The Captain Tom Foundation has changed its name following a “demand” from the late fundraiser’s family.

This week, the organisation renamed itself as the 1189808 Foundation, after its charity registration number.

The move comes after the foundation’s website stopped operating last month and Captain Tom Moore’s family was criticised by the Charity Commission in November for “repeatedly benefiting” from the “mismanaged” charity in an inquiry report.

Captain Tom’s daughter Hannah Ingram-Moore and her husband Colin were both banned from being charity trustees as part of the investigation.

In 2023, the charity announced on its website that it had closed to donations and a barrister representing Captain Tom’s family members said the organisation “is to be closed down”.

The foundation legally changed its name on Wednesday to the 1189808 Foundation, according to documents filed with Companies House, with the charity also renamed on the commission’s website.

A spokesperson for the charity confirmed to Civil Society that the name change was due to a family request.

“Notwithstanding the Charity Commission’s findings against the Ingram-Moores, as well as their failure to rectify matters by returning the funds properly due to it, the Captain Tom Foundation considers it inappropriate to stand in the way of the family's wish regarding the use of the late Sir Captain Tom’s name,” they said.

“The foundation has therefore acceded to the family’s demand that it removes Captain Tom’s name from its title.”

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the commission said: “We continue to engage with the remaining trustee, as the charity’s future is determined.

“They promptly notified the commission of this change, and the register has been updated.”

Trustees are required to keep their charity details up to date by law.
