CFG launches fraud prevention initiative

The Charity Finance Group has launched a new fraud prevention campaign and is urging charities to sign up to a new pledge.

By taking the Counter Fraud Pledge the CFG says charities can demonstrate to supporters that they are taking steps to minimise the risk. The umbrella body will send charities a toolkit to help them put the pledge into action.

Charities will also be sent a badge that they can display on their website and marketing materials.

According to figures from the Annual Fraud Indicator developed by Experian, PKF Littlejohn and the University of Portsmouth’s Centre for Counter Fraud Studies, fraud costs the charity sector £1.9bn per year.

Heather McLoughlin, policy and public affairs officer at CFG, said: “Fraud is one of the biggest challenges facing the charity sector. We know that charities are awake to this threat and many are leading the way with robust counter fraud policies. But there are others that are still grappling with this ever-evolving threat.

“CFG wants to help charities stay ahead of the people and groups that seek to defraud them and the pledge is at the heart of this work. Our hope is that the Counter Fraud Pledge will increase awareness of fraud and how to tackle it. We also believe that it will demonstrate to beneficiaries, funders and the people that support and donate to charities, that charities do take the threat seriously and are actively working to safeguard their organisation’s assets and reputation.”
