Charities reported 108 data breaches to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) in the second quarter of 2019-20.
The ICO has recently published the latest data breach trends for the second quarter of 2019-20, which show that charities reported fewer incidents than the same period of last year, when 137 incidents were reported.
Most charity incidents were classified as “other non-cyber incident” (37), followed by “loss/theft of paperwork or data left in insecure location” (23).
Seven incidents related to data being emailed to the wrong person, and eight to data being posted or faxed to the wrong recipient. Seven cases involved a failure to use blind carbon copy (bcc) on emails.
Over the period nearly 3,000 incidents were reported across all sectors, meaning charities accounted for just 3.6 per cent of all reports. This is in line with the other reporting periods.
The sector with the highest number of incidents was health (591), followed by general businesses (492) and education (322).
