A programme which prevented millions of meals going to waste, a scheme to train some of the world’s poorest people to pump their own water, and a series of innovative restaurants in prisons are among 30 inspiring projects shortlisted for the Charity Awards 2017.
The Charity Awards is the charity sector’s longest-running, biggest and best-known awards ceremony.
Charities are judged by an independent panel of charity leaders as having demonstrated outstanding best practice which other organisations can learn from across ten categories.
The category winners, plus the recipients of the Overall Award for Excellence and the Daniel Phelan Award for Outstanding Achievement, will be announced at a black tie dinner on 8 June, held in the grounds of the Tower of London.
The evening will be hosted by BBC presenter Louise Minchin, who will be joined by representatives of the shortlisted charities, as well as leaders from Britain’s best known and best loved charities.
Other shortlisted charities include a campaign for getting subtitles into most video-on-demand content, and another which matches lonely older people with volunteers for Sunday lunch.

Julian Chislett, chief executive of Civil Society Media, which organises the Charity Awards, congratulated all the shortlisted charities on making the highly-coveted shortlist.

The Charity Awards coincide with the General Election 2017, and although the Awards will have finished by the time polls close, those attending will have the opportunity to watch election coverage live on our main screen. We expect to have coverage all the way from the exit polls through to the first results being announced.
