Bloody Good Period has deactivated its X social media account after receiving “transphobic hate” messages, which the charity said threatened its organisation and staff.
A screenshot shows the period poverty charity was criticised on X, formerly known as Twitter, after posting a graphic that said “menstruation has no gender”.
Its accompanying caption read: “Menstruation has no gender. Everyone should be able to access the period products that they need.”
The charity told Civil Society it was discussing whether or not to return to the platform.
‘Vile abuse and threats should not be taking up the time of a small charity’
On the charity’s Instagram account last Friday, it announced it had deactivated its X account “following an onslaught of transphobic hate which directly threatened our staff and organisation”.
A spokesperson for Bloody Good Period told Civil Society: “Vile abuse and threats that threaten our safety and existence should not be taking up the time and resources of a small charity – instead, we should be able to focus our efforts on meeting the soaring demand for our services as the cost of living rages on.
“Our account is built to be a safe space; BGP simply will not facilitate the behaviour and comments that followed our tweet.
“We did not deactivate our Twitter to withdraw our support, and we never want our LGBTQIA+ friends, followers, supporters and staff members to be triggered because of something held under our name.
“We will always stand with the LGBTQIA+ community: supporting people with our services and with our words.”
