A religious charity has announced that Huw Edwards is no longer its vice president after the Welsh broadcaster was charged with making indecent images of children.

Edwards was arrested in November last year and charged last month with the offences, which took place between December 2020 and April 2022.

The National Churches Trust said it was “shocked and saddened” by reports this week of Edwards being charged and confirmed that he was no longer one of its 28 vice presidents.

Edwards had been an unpaid, voluntary vice president of the charity, whose patron is King Charles and which supports church buildings with maintenance and repairs, since 2013.

It said in a statement updated on Monday: “In light of the news this afternoon, the National Churches Trust has confirmed that Huw Edwards is no longer a vice president for the charity.

“We are shocked and saddened by the recent developments.”

Edwards appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court today and pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “Huw Edwards, 62, of Southwark, London has been charged with three counts of making indecent images of children following a Met Police investigation.

“The offences, which are alleged to have taken place between December 2020 and April 2022, relate to images shared on a WhatsApp chat.

“Edwards was arrested on 8 November 2023. He was charged on Wednesday, 26 June following authorisation from the Crown Prosecution Service.”
