Over £120,000 has been donated to a fundraising page set up by Chester Zoo following a fire at its Monsoon Forest habitat on Saturday.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire. No staff or members of the public were hurt and all the mammals, including its critically endangered orangutans, were rescued. However, the zoo was unable to save some insects, frogs and small birds.
In a statement the charity said: “The strength and support from the public has been incredibly overwhelming and the messages of goodwill have been of great comfort to our teams. We will support each other in rebuilding this part of the zoo and continue our mission of preventing extinction.”
Chester Zoo set up a donations page using JustGiving over the weekend and so far over 6,800 individual supporters have donated.
The original target had been to raise £50,000 but double this amount had been received within the first 24 hours of the appeal.
