Children England is hoping to raise £10,000 to enable it to launch an inquiry in to the welfare state and redesign it in a way that works better for children.
The umbrella body for the youth sector said that it believes the welfare state needs to be fundamentally redesigned following cuts to public services and the “corrosion and distortion of the principles and systems”.
“A 21st century version of a caring state will demand systemic redesign, learning critically from all of its history and from other countries too. The ChildFair State Inquiry will need to examine how marketisation and competitive tendering have affected the costs and quality of public services, affected the service user experience for the people who need them, and the professional practices of the people who work in them,” it said.
Children England said it believes it has the right skills and expertise to lead the inquiry and has published a detail case explaining its plans.
Since it launched the appeal last week, it has raised nearly £200. Children England is also approaching organisational funders for support.
If it raises the money, it will launch the inquiry this summer with a plan to report in spring 2020.
