BBC Children in Need’s 2024 appeal raised £39.2m on Friday night, its most for three years and 16% more than in 2023.

The three-hour annual telethon for the children and young peoples’ charity raised its highest on-the-night total since 2021, when £39.4m was donated.

It raised £5.7m more than in 2023, with the final total set to be announced later this year as donations are still rolling in.

In 2023, its on-the-night total was £33.5m, a 5% drop from £35.3m in 2022, and its lowest figure since 2014.

The televised fundraising drive’s largest drop in income was back in 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic resulted in £10.9m less being raised on the night.

Children in Need’s highest on-the-night total in the past decade was in 2018 when it raised £50.6m.

Comedian and TV presenter Paddy McGuinness raised £8.8m for the 2024 appeal on his five day cycling challenge, where he rode from Wales to Scotland on a children’s Chopper bike.

This year, the show was presented by Ade Apitan, Chris Ramsey and Rochelle Humes, alongside Vernon Kay, Mel Giedroyc and Lenny Rush.

The show featured a comedy sketch from the stars of BBC sitcom Outnumbered, along with a preview of the Doctor Who Christmas special episode and performances from Girls Aloud and Kylie Minogue.
