The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has shuffled its senior civil servants this month but has yet to confirm which minister holds the charities brief.
Polly Payne and Ruth Hannant were directors general for culture, sport and civil society at the department before the government’s reshuffle this month and have now been promoted to interim joint permanent secretaries.
Nicola Hewer and Emma Squire have been appointed as interim directors general for civil society and youth, the department confirmed.
DCMS also confirmed that voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) representative Claire Dove will remain in her role.
However, the department has yet to confirm whether Stuart Andrew will remain as civil society minister or if the charities brief will move to another DCMS politician, 17 days since the reshuffle began.
Meanwhile, James Cartlidge has retained his position as exchequer secretary to the Treasury, in which he is responsible for charity tax issues.
Minister meets charity leaders
Despite Andrew’s brief not being confirmed, DCMS posted on social media this week that he has recently met charity sector representatives to “discuss ways of working more closely together”.
ACEVO chief executive Jane Ide was among the charity leaders that met Andrew earlier this month.
“One of the key roles we can play for our members is to help ensure their voices are heard by those with influence and power - they hold so much expertise, wisdom, experience and knowledge that can be invaluable in finding solutions to the problems that face our communities,” she posted on social media.
“Big thanks to the ACEVO members that joined us for this roundtable, and thank you to Stuart Andrew for committing his time to genuine engagement and conversation with our sector in this and other forums.”
Editor's note: This article has been updated to clarify that Ruth Hannant and Polly Payne’s new roles are interim.
