Cancer Research UK saw its group income rise to £679m, according to accounts filed this week with Companies House.

But the annual report and accounts, covering the period to March 2017, show that the charity cut its spending on raising donated income by more than £8m – around 13 per cent – and saw a £4m drop in donations as a result.

Total spend of raising donations was £58.1m, compared to £66.5m the year before. Donated income fell to £190m from £194.3m.

The charity’s total income for the year included a one-off £32m from the sale of property. It says that once this is excluded, its “underlying income” rose by £12m – an increase of about 2 per cent.

The charity said its expenditure on research grew from £404m to £432m.

Total staff numbers employed within the CRUK group rose by 400 to over 3,900, including an additional 200 staff employed in fundraising and trading.

The charity saw a £1m drop in funds on its balance sheet, due to a £33.9m actuarial loss on its pension fund.

The highest earner was the chief executive, Sir Harpal Kumar, who earned £244,000.
