Baroness Delyth Morgan of Drefelin will lead a new breast cancer charity formed from the merger of Breakthrough Breast Cancer and her current charity, Breast Cancer Campaign.

Baroness Delyth Morgan of Drefelin will lead a new breast cancer charity formed from the merger of Breakthrough Breast Cancer and her current charity, Breast Cancer Campaign.

The new charity, which is currently unnamed, will have a combined income of £27m and 200 employees, according to the most recent accounts filed with the Charity Commission. They will operate from a new head office location in Aldgate, London.

Morgan has been chief executive of Breast Cancer Campaign since 2011. She was previously chief executive of Breakthrough Breast for ten years from 1996. She was appointed to the House of Lords in 2004 and served as children’s minister and intellectual property minister.

Chris Askew, the current chief executive of Breakthrough Breast Cancer, will be leaving the charity shortly but no date has been set.

Morgan said: “When I started at Breakthrough Breast Cancer in 1996 there were 15,000 women a year dying of breast cancer; now there are 12,000. It goes without saying that this is still too many.

“Leading this new charity is the opportunity to finish the job. Collaboration and enterprise will be essential - we must harness the incredible progress in science to deliver more targeted treatment, using a strong single voice to aid consistently high quality care, early detection and prevention wherever possible.

“Crucially, we cannot do it alone. We need anyone and everyone who is involved in and affected by breast cancer to stand with us.”

Lynne Berry, chair of the new charity, said: “Delyth is a transformational leader, whose warmth and unshakeable passion to make a difference for all those affected by breast cancer made her the outstanding candidate for the role, in an extremely strong field.

“I’d like also to thank Chris Askew for his remarkable contribution as CEO of Breakthrough and in his joint chief executive role with Delyth to deliver such a bold merger.”
