A former trustee who was recently banned from holding any such role for 12 years appeared publicly as a “chairman” of another charity since his disqualification, it has emerged.
The Charity Commission disqualified Vincent McBean, who was a trustee of Newham Community Leisure Trust from January 2000 until October 2022, from holding any trusteeships for 12 years in April.
It concluded that there had been serious misconduct and/or mismanagement in the administration of the charity over a sustained period of time in particular by McBean.
However, McBean appeared publicly as “chairman” of the West Indian Association of Service Personnel (WASP) charity on more than one occassion after being handed the ban.

Speaking to Civil Society, current WASP chair Sydney Marshall said McBean’s public appearances as “chairman” this year “should never have happened”.
McBean resigned as a trustee of WASP in June last year, according to the charity’s accounts for the year to March 2022, and Marshall said he took over as chair at that point.
Marshall said McBean remains a member of WASP but is involved “not in any official capacity”.
A Commission spokesperson said: “Following Vincent McBean’s disqualification from another charity, we proactively engaged with the West Indian Association of Service Personnel and provided advice and guidance.
“The WASP assured us that McBean’s role at that charity was not that of trustee, nor did he have any kind of governance responsibility.”
