Facebook has launched Personal Fundraisers, enabling users to raise money for themselves or something they care about, in the UK today.
It is one of the tools that was announced as part of a wider expansion of fundraising tools in Europe earlier this year.
Facebook said: “Personal Fundraisers on Facebook will make it simple for people to connect with their community and raise money for the people and things they care about. People can now create a fundraiser on Facebook and easily reach their friends in a few taps with the relevant information.”
Fundraisers have to be over 18 and categories include education, medical, pet medical, crisis relief, personal emergency, funeral and loss, community, and sports.
To launch a fundraising campaign users can select the option from the drop down menu on mobile devices or they can visit facebook.com/fundraisers.
The feature launched in the US earlier this year. It has been used to raise money for medical bills and support people affected by natural disasters.
One father used it to raise $38,000 to cover the costs of his daughter’s heart transplant.
There has been increasing scrutiny of crowdfunding platforms in the UK over how crowdfunding platforms can be abused by fraudsters. The Charity Commission recently convened a summit with many of the major players to talk about ways to improve transparency.
