Tom Henderson, founder and ousted chief executive of Shelterbox, is understood to have stepped down from his trustee position at Shelter for Humanity, which was launched two months ago in memory of his wife.

It comes just weeks after and money laundering offences, along with two other men.

Henderson launched Shelter for Humanity in April, and it was registered under the name the Jane Henderson Foundation, in memory of his late wife.

The Charity Commission has been carefully monitoring Shelter for Humanity since its inception. A spokeswoman said: “The Commission is aware of an ongoing police investigation and the arrest of a trustee of the Jane Henderson Foundation. We contacted the charity and they have informed us that the trustee has since resigned from his position at the charity.

"At the time that the Foundation applied to be registered, the application raised concerns with our registration team as the listed chair of trustees was known to the Commission to be a dismissed CEO of another charity.

“As a charity defined in law and with trustees who at that time were eligible for trusteeship, the Commission was obliged to register the Foundation. However, we have been carefully monitoring the charity since. “

Shelter for Humanity did not respond to calls.
