The investor George Soros has given $18bn (£13.6bn) to his Open Society Foundations, making it the world's third richest charity, according to articles published today.

The donation is the bulk of his $23bn fortune, according to the Wall Street Journal, which says the information has been passed onto it by officials at the foundation.

Soros is a financier who made a fortune betting against the pound during the collapse of the Exchange Rate Mechanism under John Major.

His foundation becomes the third richest in the world, behind the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which is worth $44bn (£33bn), and the Wellcome Trust, which is worth £23bn.

Open Society Foundations is an international human rights foundation which says it works in every country in the world.
