The crowdfunding platform GoFundMe has announced today that it is partnering with Meta, the tech conglomerate which owns Facebook and Instagram, to launch a “social sharing feature” that it hopes will “supercharge” charity fundraisers and help them to raise more money.
The new feature will reportedly make it much easier for individuals to raise money for their chosen charities on GoFundMe by providing improved sharing capabilities for charities and fundraising organisers that help fundraisers to stand out more in Facebook and Instagram feeds.
The feature will also offer “native” donation experiences for GoFundMe fundraisers through Instagram, as well as "real-time, dynamic progress bars", and a new donate button that is “designed to inspire action”, according to the crowdfunding platform.
Social media becoming key avenue to reach donors
This new partnership between GoFundMe and Meta comes at a time when social media appears to have become an increasingly key avenue for reaching new donors, according to an upcoming report set to be published by GoFundMe and US-based software company, Classy, which was acquired by GoFundMe in 2022.
Among the report’s key findings were that half of Gen Z respondents said they shared causes or fundraising opportunities at least once a week, while at least half of Gen Z and Millennial respondents said they shared them monthly. Additionally, a quarter of Gen Z respondents said that social media inspired them to look further into, or donate to, a cause they discovered via online platforms.
One in every five GoFundMe pages started for a charity
GoFundMe’s CEO, Tim Cadogan, said: “In the UK, one in every five GoFundMe pages is started for a charity. This integration will unlock powerful new channels for kind-hearted Britons to raise millions more for charities – and give organisations the tools to inspire a new generation of supporters to make a difference for the causes they care about.”
The UK Instagram integration of the new feature is set to launch on 31 October, with the feature launching on Facebook shortly after.
