Two UK hospice charities have announced that they will soon open their largest ever shops.

St Luke’s Hospice will open a charity department store in Sheffield on 30 September while City Hospice will open a shop in Cardiff on 3 October.

The 8,500 square feet St Luke’s Hospice shop will be the charity’s “most ambitious project to date”, it said, while City Hospice’s over 3,500 square feet store will include a dedicated community space.

St Luke’s: Shop will meet ‘rising demand for cost-conscious shopping’

St Luke’s, which supports adults with terminal illnesses in Sheffield, said its new store in the city will have an extra 7,000 sq ft of warehouse space “to provide a donation hub for items to be dropped off by supporters quickly and conveniently”.

Head of retail Jenny Booth said: “We’re so excited to open St Luke’s Kilner Way – our biggest store yet. We’re welcoming supporters to join us for our ribbon cutting so please come along and get involved.

“Following on from the success of our shop at the Moor, which opened last August, Kilner Way will have its own unique look and feel, providing the perfect setting for the range that has been hand-picked by the St Luke’s retail team from our thousands of donations.”

Booth added that the new shop will meet “the rising demand for cost-conscious shopping and high-quality pre-loved goods” by selling “a full range of eco-conscious items”.

“We’ll be covering everything from contemporary and vintage fashion to occasion wear – departments will include clothing, furniture, books and records,” she said.

City Hospice: ‘Community space will bring people together’

City Hospice’s new store will offer high-quality secondhand items including accessories, books, clothing, furniture and homeware.

The charity, which provides home-based specialist palliative care in Cardiff, said the store would act as a “flagship” for its fundraising efforts and will have a community space to bring people together.

It will allow residents “to participate in crafting sessions, upcycling and other creative workshops” and offer “a welcoming environment for individuals to learn new skills, connect with others and support the hospice’s work through engagement”.

Chief executive Liz Booyse said: “We’re especially proud that our new shop, our largest ever in Cardiff, will not only raise funds for the charity but also serve as a hub for the community.

“Through our workshops and events, we aim to create a space where people can come together, share experiences and support one another – all while contributing to a cause that helps so many families across Cardiff during life’s most challenging moments.”
