Islamic Centre of England reopens to the public despite ongoing investigation

The Islamic Centre of England Limited has reopened despite it still being investigated by the Charity Commission.

The regulator launched a statutory inquiry into the charity last November over “serious governance issues” which included failing to fully comply with official warnings.

Emma Moody from Womble Bond Dickinson UK LLP was appointed interim manager on 4 May of this year.

The charity was closed on 23 May 2023 after encountering problems with securing insurance to enable the mosque to be used by the public .

Issues with the charity’s insurance predate the appointment of the interim manager, the regulator said.

“The trustees were aware from April 2023 that the charity’s then insurers had decided not to renew some of its insurance policies. They therefore decided to temporarily cease some of the charity’s activities.”

Since then, the interim manager and trustees have managed to secure the necessary insurance to reopen the mosque, the Commission said.

“Suggestions that the temporary closure resulted from factors other than the insurance matter are entirely false and misleading”, the Commission’s statement reads.

Civil Society has approached the charity for comment.
