London Marathon runners have raised more than £37m on the JustGiving platform since Sunday’s event, with more donations set to come in.
This represents a 43% year-on-year rise in donations through the platform, as last year saw around £25m donated the day after the marathon.
Meanwhile, around 800 runners have raised nearly £2m so far for the British Heart Foundation, which was charity of the year for this year’s event.
1,700 charities receive donations
Donations reached more than £2m via marathon runners’ JustGiving fundraising pages on the day of the race itself, nearly double that of last year’s race.
JustGiving has revealed more than 1,700 different charities benefited from London Marathon fundraising via the platform.
More than 21,000 pages were created on the platform to fundraise for the marathon this year, with each raising £1,600 on average.
Pascale Harvie, president and general manager at JustGiving, said “We’re incredibly proud of all the fundraisers who took part in the London Marathon this weekend and the rise in donations is just another reminder of people’s generosity even in such tough circumstances.
“It never fails to inspire us to see the efforts people will go to in support of causes close to their hearts and the huge adversity humans can find the strength to overcome. Huge congratulations to all of those involved from the team at JustGiving, and thank you, on behalf of the 1,700 charities that will benefit as a result of your hard work and dedication.”
