People using JustGiving to raise money for good causes can now share a fundraising page or the fact they have made a donation with friends and family using WhatsApp.
JustGiving produced an updated version of its mobile app for iOS devices in April, which allowed users to share a fundraising page via WhatsApp. On Friday it extended this to allow people donating via its mobile website to share the fact they had done so via WhatsApp.
Users could previously share donations on Twitter and Facebook to encourage their social networks to become involved – this has now been expanded to include WhatsApp threads as well.
According to Jonathan Waddingham, social product manager at JustGiving, the ability to share donations via WhatsApp is part of JustGiving’s continued efforts to explore the ways that social media affects fundraising.
“We watch changes in consumer behaviour closely and are always looking to innovate and enable people and causes to raise money on new channels and in new ways," he said.
“When we launched JustGiving’s new iOS app in April we were the first fundraising platform to introduce the ability to share pages via WhatsApp – and this has already raised more than £50,000.
"Following this success, we’ve now extended the functionality across our mobile site making it really easy to share information via WhatsApp, as well as on Facebook, Twitter, email and SMS.
“This means JustGiving fundraisers can now reach new and younger supporters and raise even more money for the good causes they care about.”
JustGiving currently has over 12 million registered users and has raised nearly £2bn for various good causes since it was founded in 2001.
