Large care charity introduces flexible working for frontline operational staff

Community Integrated Care has introduced flexible working options for its frontline staff following the deployment of a four-day week for head office and support function staff.

Last year, the charity told Civil Society that it was planning to offer flexible working to employees in frontline operational roles.

It has now confirmed that it implemented various flexible working regimes such as contracts ranging from four to 48 hours and the bank of hours system.

In addition, the charity said that it will expand its four-day week offer to service leaders once it has the right internal processes in place.

Investing in digital systems

The charity initially introduced a shorter working week to over 300 employees in its finance, human resources and other support functions in June 2021 as part of changes made during the Covid-19 pandemic.

It then expanded the offer to operational leaders, which encompass regional managers and others, and is now looking to do the same for its over 220 service leaders.

The charity said it has also invested in digital systems including rota systems so that its 4,600 frontline staff can, for example, switch shifts in advance.

Charity Commission data for the financial year ending 31 March 2022 puts the charity’s total income at more than £143m.

‘Positively received’

Teresa Exelby, chief people officer at Community Integrated Care, said: “Our move to a four-day working week has been really positively received since its initial implementation in 2021 and we’re currently taking steps to facilitate the scheme for our frontline leaders.

“To do this, we’re looking at how we can improve our internal processes, such as our on-call system, so that our colleagues can really make the most of the flexibility it will bring.”

She added: “We’ve also introduced a range of flexible working options for our frontline operational teams, such as contracts that range from four to 48 hours, bank work and investments in digital systems that can be utilised to give colleagues further choice and control, including our rota management platform.

“These actions have been built with our colleague’s voices at the heart of them, giving them the flexibility and freedom to build their own ways of working.”
