Organisers of the London Marathon have invited charities without a place for next year’s running event to apply for one through a ballot.
UK-registered charities that had no places this year and do not hold places for the 2025 marathon are now able to apply for one of 500 running spots available at next year’s event.
Charities have until 1 August this year to apply for places for free through the ballot for next year’s marathon.
London Marathon Events (LME) will then randomly select the 500 successful charities, who will be asked to pay a fee of £400 plus VAT to secure their place, by 9 August.
LME last ran its charity ballot for the 2020 London Marathon, which could not take place due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Organisers have not held the ballot since as they have instead redistributed places from the cancelled 2020 event.
The average amount raised through a charity place in the TCS London Marathon is more than £2,600.
LME chief executive Hugh Brasher said: “Fundraising is at the heart of the TCS London Marathon and we work with more than 2,000 charities every year.
“We are delighted to provide this opportunity for 500 more charities to be involved in the 2025 event.
“It will be a very special year as we will be celebrating the 45th edition of the London Marathon, the world’s biggest annual one-day fundraising event.”
On the day after the 2024 event, it was announced that the total raised had already set a new world record of £67m.
The 2025 London Marathon is set to take place on 27 April next year.
