London's Air Ambulance has confirmed that it has acquired a second medical helicopter, after raising more than £4m.
In a statement, London's Air Ambulance said that the ‘Your London, Your Helicopter’ fundraising campaign has raised just over £4m for the organisation since it was launched in February, and the new helicopter is expected to be operational by early 2016.
London's Air Ambulance said that while the fundraising campaign has been successful, it has still not reached its £6m target which would cover the second aircraft’s running costs for the next five years.
According to the statement, the largest pledge to the campaign has been a £2m individual donation by the London Freemasons. In 2014 the organisation also received £1m worth of Libor fines from the government.
The acquisition of a second helicopter and extending flying hours in the summer will allow London's Air Ambulance to reach a further “400 patients a year”, according to the statement.
Graham Hodgkin, chief executive of London’s Air Ambulance, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have now completed the acquisition of our second MD902 Explorer helicopter. While more money still needs to be raised and there is still more work to do to get the aircraft ready for operations, this is a truly exciting development for London and the biggest step-change in our service resilience in the charity’s history.
“Thank you to all those who have already contributed. We will continue to fundraise towards our ultimate target and ask everyone to help in any way they can.”
