Edel Harris has decided to step down as chief executive of Mencap after three and a half years in the role, the charity has announced.
Harris, who joined Mencap in January 2020, will remain in post until 21 August, and the charity’s board will begin recruiting her permanent successor.
Jackie O’Sullivan, Mencap’s executive director for communications, advocacy and activism, will become acting CEO when Harris leaves.
Harris said: “I have loved working at Mencap, and I am particularly proud of leading the organisation during the pandemic, the launch of our ambitious and inspiring big plan, and of building a great executive team.
“It has been my honour to work alongside so many committed and hardworking people.
“I wish Mencap all the very best in their future endeavours for the UK to be the best place for people with a learning disability to live happy and healthy lives.”
Mencap chair Carolyn Fairbairn said: “We wish Edel all the very best in the future.
“She has been fully committed to leading Mencap and improving the lives of people with a learning disability.
“She leaves behind her a strong leadership team and an organisation determined to do its absolute best. We are very grateful to her for her contribution.”
Harris spoke to Civil Society last year about her life and career including her upbringing on a prison officers’ estate, leading Mencap through the Covid-19 pandemic, and shifting the charity’s focus after 76 years.
