NCVO publishes free guide for charities about preparing for Brexit

NCVO has published a free guide to help charities prepare for when the UK leaves the European Union next year.

Brexit and the voluntary sector: Preparing for change, outlines potential issues for charities and says charities must begin preparing now for Brexit ahead of 29 March 2019 when the UK formally leaves.

The main areas UK charities should be considering are: the broader economic impact of Brexit, employing EU nationals and access to EU funding, NCVO says. The report also says charities should consider what opportunities there might be.

NCVO’s report includes a general checklist for all charities and another one specifically for charities which employ EU nationals.

Ben Westerman, Brexit analyst at NCVO, said: “Charities need to be thinking on two levels. The first part is which bits of legislation are likely to affect them.”

This includes things like whether their workforce is likely to be affected by changes to immigration rules and funding arrangements.

But charities also need to consider “wider environment in which we are working” and think about if they are “prepared for a potential economic downturn”, or “at least prepared for an environment of uncertainty that is going to happen over the next few years,” he said.

This means that all charities are likely to be affected in some way, he said.

Westerman also said charities should be thinking proactively about how they can be involved in “building a new country after Brexit”.

He added that charities should start planning now, if they haven’t already, because “we don’t really expect any further meaningful advice from the government” and said that charities should be “talking to each other” and “bridging the gap between organisations”.
