Nectar customers can now donate their points to charities through a partnership with fundraising platform Crowdfunder.
Nectar believes that up to £250m worth of points is now available from its 18m members. In 2020 a campaign encouraging people to donate points raised £1.7m for Comic Relief.
So far over 100 charities have set up pages with Crowdfunder. This includes a variety of local charities as well as larger national charities such as Macmillan Cancer Support and Alzheimer's Research UK.
Customers can donate a minimum of 200 points, roughly £1, by opening the Nectar app on their phones and following the Crowdfunder link.
Hilary Evans, chief executive of Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “We’re delighted that people can now support the important work of charities like Alzheimer’s Research UK through Nectar Donate.
“Despite the challenges of the last two years, we continue to be humbled by the generosity of the British public. One in two people know someone affected by dementia, so now more than ever, that support will help drive our research towards breakthroughs that change lives.”
How to register a charity
Nectar and Crowfunder say there are “no hidden fees” and charities will not be charged to accept Nectar points.
To accept points, charities need to register and set up a crowdfunding project.
Charities need to have been registered in the UK for at least 12 months, based in the UK and have a UK bank account in their name.
Gift Aid cannot be claimed on Nectar point donations.
