The Charity Commission has issued a notice to Care International UK as the charity has failed to file accounts for its two most recent financial years.

Care International UK last submitted accounts to the regulator for the year to June 2020, when its income was £73.9m.

Its accounts for 2020-21 are overdue by more than a year, according to the Commission’s website, while its 2021-22 report is almost a month late.

A Charity Commission spokesperson said: “We have engaged with the trustees at Care International UK to remind them of their reporting responsibilities.

“As regulator, we expect all charities to comply with their duties in a timely manner. As part of our defaulting process, we have issued Care International UK with a default notice and are currently considering appropriate next steps.”

The international development charity said its accounts had been delayed due to “the pandemic and the impact of cuts to the aid budget on our programmes”.

“Unfortunately, this delay had a knock-on effect on the timely submission of our financial year 2021 accounts,” a spokesperson for the charity said.

“At the same time, we had to undertake an organisational restructure in response to a significant reduction in our budget resulting from further cuts to the UK aid programme, which caused additional disruption to normal business.”

Care International UK reduced its average staff numbers fronm 119 to 106 during the restructure, the charity confirmed.

The spokesperson said the audit of the charity’s 2020-21 accounts was “in its final stage and should be completed in the near future”.

They added that the charity’s unaudited accounts for 2020-21 showed “a stable financial position and a strong reserves position”.

Care International UK announced last month that it has appointed current Cherie Blair Foundation for Women chief executive Helen McEachern as its next CEO.

McEachern is due to leave her current role in July.
