The Charity Commission has said it is engaging with Refuge’s trustees after the domestic abuse charity filed a serious incident report.
Refuge submitted the report after some of its staff described being bullied and a “toxic” work environment at the charity in a Civil Society news story last week.
The charity said: “In line with Charity Commission guidance, Refuge submitted a serious incident to the Charity Commission in response to the Civil Society article on 5 May 2023.
“All charities are required by statute to bring to the attention of the regulator a media article that can impact its reputation. This is standard practice. We await the Commission’s response.”
A Charity Commission spokesperson said: “We can confirm that, in line with our guidance, we have received a serious incident report from Refuge relating to media coverage. We are assessing the information provided and engaging with the trustees to inform any next steps.”
