Save the Children UK has put a senior employee on leave as it investigates a TikTok video she recently posted that expressed anti-Zionist sentiments.

In the video, reportedly posted by Save the Children UK campaigns manager Yasmin Ghaffar, she asks her online followers for bagel shops recommendations in New York, to where she was travelling.

Now removed from TikTok, the video asked for recommendations of outlets that were “actively pro-Palestinians” and “known to not be in support of that hell-hole place and Zionism” as she did not want to spend money on any “genocidal maniacs”.

The charity’s managers became aware of the employee’s post on Sunday and had instructed her to take it down.

It has opened an internal investigation into the case.

‘We are deeply sorry’

A charity spokesperson told Civil Society: “The language used in this TikTok is unacceptable and does not in any way reflect the views of Save the Children UK.

“We are deeply sorry for the offence caused. Our social media guidelines prohibit staff from posting any offensive content.

“An internal investigation has been instigated. The member of staff concerned has been placed on leave pending the outcome of the investigation.”

A Charity Commission spokesperson told Civil Society: “We are aware of concerns raised about social media activity of an employee at Save the Children UK.

“We are in touch with the charity to determine if there is a regulatory role for the Commission. In line with our guidance, the charity promptly reported this matter to us.”

Recently, the commission closed a compliance case into Citizens Advice after UK Lawyers for Israel raised concerns that the charity allegedly breached its charitable objectives when its staff publicly supported Palestine at work.

The regulator found no breach of the charity’s objects or legal duties and closed the case.
