A Scottish housing charity has been recognised as a living wage employer after agreeing to pay its over 600 staff more than the government-mandated national hourly rate.
Hanover Scotland announced this week that it would ensure all its employees and contracted workers through third-party suppliers would receive the “real living wage”.
While the national living wage is currently set at £11.44 per hour for people aged 21 and over, the voluntary real living wage is higher and designed to reflect the true cost of living.
Calculated by the Resolution Foundation, the current rate is £12.60 (£13.85 in London) and applies to all employees aged 18 and over.
The Edinburgh-based charity, which manages more than 5,000 homes, joins over 3,750 accredited living wage employers in Scotland.
‘Everyone deserves a fair wage’
Sarah Steel, head of human resources and organisational development at Hanover Scotland, said: “We’re thrilled to be recognised as a living wage employer.
“This demonstrates our commitment to enhancing the quality of life for our employees and aligns with our strategy to be an outstanding employer.
“This accreditation reflects our dedication to fair pay as outlined in our 2022 pay framework review.
“At Hanover Scotland, we believe that everyone deserves a fair wage and are proud to champion this cause.”
Rachel Morrison-McCormick, living wage projects coordinator at Living Wage Scotland, said: “Hanover Scotland’s accreditation is an inspiring step forward.
“Their leadership sets an example for other employers, showing the tangible benefits of investing in fair pay.”
