Shelter staff accept revised pay offer after strike action

More than 600 employees at Shelter, the homelessness charity, have voted to accept a revised pay offer after going on strike.

Members of workers union Unite at Shelter took strike action in December over a pay dispute, which was suspended when the charity offered them a new pay deal.

Unite said that during the strike action talks were held at the conciliation service Acas, where the improved pay offer was made.

The offer was a 7% consolidated award from 1 December 2022, which includes 3% paid from 1 April 2022 and an additional 4% paid from 1 December, plus a non-consolidated payment of £1,250.

Tim Gutteridge, director of finance and strategy enablement at Shelter, said: “We are pleased that, after reaching an agreement with the union, members of the union have voted to accept the pay offer, and the dispute has been resolved.”

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “This was a significant result, our members were prepared to stand together in unity and by doing so were able to secure a greatly improved pay increase.

“This is further proof of how Unite’s unflinching focus on jobs, pay and conditions is delivering substantial financial benefits for its members.”

Unite regional officer Peter Storey said Unite has emerged from the dispute far stronger at Shelter and it is determined to ensure that members will continue to receive fair pay awards in the future.
