Charities have been asked to share their views on a “vision statement” for volunteering from the Welsh Government and membership body Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WVCA).

Organisations and individuals have until 30 May to respond to a consultation on the statement, which forms part of a broader project between the Welsh Government and WCVA to co-design a new approach to volunteering in the country.

A delivery framework to accompany the vision framework is due to be published in the coming weeks, ahead of WCVA’s flagship gofod3 event for charities.

The statement reads: “Volunteering is at the heart of Wales’ identity - vital to the well-being of our communities.

“Volunteering is good for those who give, as well as those who benefit. It is good for people and places and defines the kind of country we want to be.

“It is a pillar of community life – vital to the services and support that everyone, of whatever gender, ethnicity, language and ability, needs at some time in their lives.

“Safe, supported and sustainable volunteering should be at the heart of Wales’ national life.”

The broader project is considering the importance of informal and employee volunteering as well as the role of local authorities and public bodies.

It is also looking at volunteering in specific policy areas such as health and social care, sports and arts, environment and climate change, education and young people plus the Welsh language and communities.

WCVA and the Welsh Government have also facilitated the Volunteering Cross-Sectoral Leadership Group, which includes people from the voluntary, public and private sectors and meets to set strategic priorities, attract more resources, and inform policy developments.
