WWF launches panda-print face masks to raise funds

WWF has launched a series of reusable face masks covedered in panda-themed print to fund its work.

The series launched earlier this week and stock has already sold out, with the next batch shipping next week.

The masks are made of organic cotton, shipped in recycled plastic bags, can be washed and reused and are available in different sizes for adults and children. They are sold for £9.99.

Reusable cotton masks are non-medical and less effective than medical models, but they can still help stop the spread of the coronavirus. Face coverings became mandatory on public transport last Monday.

Other charities selling face masks

WWF is the latest in a series of charities raising funds by selling face masks, most commonly through retailers or individuals making them and donating the profits.

Last week, Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity (GOSH) said rainbow face masks created by paralympic gold-medalist Will Bayley have raised £20,000 so far for the charity’s coronavirus appeal.

Louise Parkes, chief executive at the charity, said: “Since the beginning of this crisis, the rainbow has been a symbol of hope for the nation – Will is now bringing that hope to children being treated at GOSH with his unique creation. This will help us raise money to support the hospital during this critical time and beyond and for that I want to say a massive thank you.”

Meanwhile, a group of creatives in the Cambridge area has been making masks for people in exchange for a donation to the NHS Charities Together coronavirus appeal. They suggest a donation of £4 per mask and originally set out to raise £500. They have now raised more than £26,000 and made 5,000 masks, according to their appeal page on JustGiving

Small charity The Hibbs Lupus Trust is also selling its own masks, while retailer Zalando has been donating profits from its masks to international non-profit humedica.
