Richard Fries

Richard Fries is best-known in the sector for his role as chief charity commissioner from 1992 to 1999, responsible for modernisation of the Charity Commission and implementation of the 1993 Charities Act.

His background was in the civil service and he became involved in government relations with the voluntary sector before taking up the Charity Commissioner. He was also a trustee of Timebank.

He is a visiting fellow at the Centre for Civil Society at the London School of Economics and chair of the International Centre for Not-For-Profit Law in Washington. He has continued to be involved in work for the voluntary sector both in the UK and abroad and was a judge for the Charity Awards for several years.
