The Charity Shops Survey 2023 shows that staff recruitment and retention remains a challenge for many charities as they continue to feel the bite of the cost-of-living crisis.
In light of the impact of Covid-19 on the charity sector, we had previously removed some questions and simplified the annual Charity Shops Survey. But following feedback from charities, we decided to gradually rebuild the survey over the next few years by reinstating a number of questions. This year, in addition to the usual questions, we asked participating charities about their rates of staff turnover and absences, and gathered detailed data on staff costs and gift aid income
The survey collected detailed data from 43 organisations, ranging from the country’s biggest charity shop network to a voluntary organisation that supplements its income with a single store.
The Charity Shops Survey is the definitive analysis of how the UK's charity shop chains are performing . It includes detailed financial benchmarking data revealing:
- Overall profits
- Income sources such as donated goods, bought-in goods, rag and gift aid
- Costs such as shop rents and staffing
- Volunteer numbers
