Society Diary: April Fools, Barbie and famous goats

06 Apr 2023 Voices

This week, Diary recounts charities’ best April Fools jokes, how they've been adapting their comms to the Barbie movie and more.

Today’s column comes with exciting news. After a long stint as Civil Society’s anonymous columnist, this diarist will be revealing their identity, which has been the series of speculation during many a charity sector event.

“I bet Diary is handsome,” one reader suspected, not incorrectly. Another suggested they might be a talentless loser writing from their mum’s shed, which Diary denies, and actually it’s quite nice out here in springtime.

Well – here it goes, the moment you’ve been all waiting for…Diary is…Elton John!

For the perceptive reader who noted this April Fools joke is six days late, admit it – it’s a little bit funny (this feeling inside…)

Anywho, this is Diary’s handsome and definitely not talentless way of saying that many charities posted April Fools jokes.

April Fools Day

RSPCA tweeted asking if its followers would like to welcome baby hippopotamuses into their home. This, apparently, was a “joke” , but one distressed commenter said to be careful of them as now her lake is overpopulated with massive hippos.

RNLI said it would be looking at changing its pager sounds, which alert the crew to rescue people at sea. The new options included the Kim Possible theme tune, a classical instrumental, and a random man shouting “lifeboat, lifeboat, grab your shoes, grab your coat”  which would no doubt cause alarm.

Many commenters grumbled that it should be up to the crew to decide (but if they had to pick, the latter would do).

You’ll be surprised to hear that PETA UK used April Fools as a chance to upset people again. The charity gave out free milk samples and then told those that tried it that it had been dog's milk.

One lady responded: “You should've told me that first.”

PETA did not disclose what the milk actually was but ended its video asking what the difference was with drinking dog’s milk to cow’s milk.

The film closes with the line: “We’re the only animal to drink another species’ milk – Isn’t it all a bit gross?”

Barbie banter

Greta Gerwig's hotly-anticipated new film Barbie dropped a bunch of movie posters and a teaser trailer this week. It's main poster pictures Barbie and Ken with the slogan "She's everything. He's just Ken."

RSPB, the bird charity, took to Twitter to share its bird-themed take on the concept, which has quickly become a meme.

Freedom From Torture used a screenshot from the Barbie trailer to convey a more serious message.

Paul O’Goaty

The much-loved charity ambassador and celebrity Paul O'Grady died last week. He was known as an animal lover, particularly of dogs, and since he passed people have named animals in his honour.

A nine-month-old puppy rescued on the day of his death was named Grady.

In Leicestershire, a goat has been named after him too. Paul O’Goaty has many famous goat friends, including but not limited to, Whoopi Goatberg, Vincent Van Goat and Selena Goatmez.
