Asthma + Lung UK

Loyal readers, after a week of civil unrest, welcome back to another light-hearted interview from yours truly, Society Diary.

This week, answering the questions other charity sector journalists dare not ask, is Asthma + Lung UK’s chief executive Sarah Sleet.

You can read our exchange below, which includes tales of Mongolian throat singers, birds taking over the planet and a reliance on caffeine.

How are you?

“Pretty good! I’ve been in my role at Asthma + Lung UK for about four months now, and it’s been challenging and exciting getting to understand respiratory conditions and their devastating impacts. Plus, I am working with a whole bunch of great new people.”

Tea or coffee?

“Tea first and last thing and coffee is scattered in between. Either way it’s clear I’m a complete caffeine addict.”

Do you have a favourite animal?

“Don’t tell my two dogs and three cats this, but I absolutely love the corvid family of birds which includes crows and magpies. They are small bundles of cheeky geniuses who I think will rule the world one day.”

What is a perfect evening for you?

“Going out with my partner and friends for a bit of frolicking – drag bingo was a recent favourite of mine, and then back home for a nightcap.”

What will boost your mood if you are feeling low?

“I always find getting out in nature or a bit of tending the garden or allotment is uplifting. Failing that, you can’t beat a decent glass of wine.”

If you could go back in time and speak to your younger self, what would you say?

“Be braver.”

What is your favourite colour and why?

“Well, this changes over time and context. Currently, for the first time, I’m into pink. Not Barbie pink or screaming pink – more dirty or dusky pink. Never say never.”

What is the best performance you have seen live?

“Probably most were from bands nobody will have heard of. One particularly great gig was with the singer Desmond Dekker in this small, barely lit and packed venue – he was a legend. And I’ll never forget the Mongolian throat singers either.”

As a born Londoner, what is your favourite part of the city?

“Well, I was born in Stratford – just three miles or so from where I am sitting now. The rest of the family are all from the East End, and my grandad was born close to Whitechapel where Asthma + Lung UK is based. I really do feel like I have come home by working in this vibrant part of the city. There’s a real buzz in the area and great food too.”

Would you rather be cuddled up with a book or be outside exploring?

“Exploring – you can always take a book with you.”
