Society Diary: Pride, ponies and barbells

Happy Friday, dear reader. It’s been a busy week at CSM Towers, with the Charity Awards 2023 taking up much of the company’s time.

Diary can take barely any credit for its success, but they were certainly present on the evening to drink all of the booze available whilst sincerely trying to help (which probably led to more problems).

One of Diary’s colleagues serenaded a member of the Charity Commission who, despite ample encouragement, refused to dance along to the ditty.

Another took their BeReal with an attendee in the name of networking whilst one spoke to a (no doubt enthralled) professional about the history of kilts.

With big and small charities celebrated during the ceremony, the evening was a roaring success.

Diary asked if they were eligible for an award for turning up to work the next day, but remained empty-handed.

In other sector news, charities are celebrating Pride month, a man climbed a massive mountain and a pony asked for help.

Man carries barbell up Ben Nevis for charity

David Dooher carried a 100kg barbell on his shoulders whilst travelling up Britain’s highest mountain for charity this week.

This makes Diary’s workout routine look laughable, as someone who struggles walking up the stairs most days.

It took Dooher 16 and a half hours to complete the challenge for the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, a charity that supports people with motor neurone disease.

Aiming for the world record attempt for Britain’s heaviest hike, Dooher’s fundraiser has raised over £16,000 so far.

According to the charity’s Twitter account, Dooher spent his birthday completing the hike, which is Diary’s idea of the worst birthday ever, so kudos to him.

Drink with Pride

The ushering in of June means the start of Pride month, when brands’ logos become colours of the rainbow in support of the LGBTQIA+ community.

BrewDog has partnered with the LGBTQ charity MindOut to celebrate the movement. It has launched a limited-edition lager called Pride, with 50p from each sale going to the charity.

The beer company is also offering 100% of profits from the sale of its pronoun pin-badges and Pride t-shirts to the charity.

While the thought of more alcohol does not appeal to Diary after this week’s award celebrations, it will aim to do its bit for charity by sinking a few cold ones before the month is out.

Handsome Yohan

Blue Cross have called out for its supporters to help the handsome Yohan, a 10-year-old pony, find a home after he has spent 500 days in the charity’s care.

The charity believes the pony’s long stay may be because he is not comfortable with unfamiliar people and is a bit fearful (to which Diary, for one, can relate).

It has made a video of the handsome pony to entice supporters to find him pastures anew.

Diary pleas with you, reader, to adopt Mr Yohan, before he appears in Civil Society’s office on Monday morning. Can one ride a pony to work in central London?
